If you have oily skin, the chances are that you are very conscious of your open pores, pimples, blemishes, acne and inflammation. Understand, though, that oily skin may not be your fault. It can be due to poor diet, fluctuating hormone levels as well as genetics. Your choice of oily skincare products can make matters worse. It is very tempting to think that harsh products are needed to get rid of the oil, but actually, the reverse is the case. Harsh products only increase oil production, whereas it is better to use gentle products to get the skin back into balance. Follow the advice in these 8 tips and you will be well on your way to smoother, lovelier skin.

1. Use plenty of warm (not hot) water and a gentle but effective cleanser to stop the pores clogging. As part of your oily skin care routine, it is vital to use a gentle cleanser rich in active plant nutrients. This reduces the risk of cleanser induced skin irritation, which can cause the oil glands to produce even more oil.

2. Avoid astringent lotions and irritating alcohol based toners that strip the skin of natural oils. They will cause your oil glands to work harder to compensate for the oils lost. Try a gentle rose water facial mist instead.

3. Wash your face two or three times a day (morning and evening are essential), but no more, as you will over stimulate the skin to produce more oil.

4. Always rinse your face thoroughly in cool water and pat dry gently.

5. Apply a tiny amount of a light moisturiser containing plant extracts and natural oils, which will help to restore the balance to your skin.

6. Apply a deep cleansing mask once a week.

7. Never apply make up unless your skin is thoroughly cleansed and toned and remove all traces of makeup before you go to bed.

8. Avoid any products which contain mineral oil, which is also known as liquid paraffin or petrolatum. Check the product labels for yourself. This ingredient will clog the pores and irritate your skin condition.

Instead, look for products which contain jojoba oil and maracuja passion fruit extract. If you think more oil is the last thing your skin needs, read on! Both of these oils come from plants and jojoba oil is almost chemically identical to the oil – called sebum – produced by the skin. Consequently, it is very effective at regulating the production of sebum. Research shows that maracuja oil is a natural emollient, which is very similar to the structure of our skin. It also helps to regulate sebum production, as well. These are some of the gentle ingredients which will help to solve your oily skin care problems.

By choosing and regularly using oily skincare products containing these oils, your skin will be nourished and revitalised, leaving it feeling softer, smoother and lovelier – and back in balance again!
